I’m Moving South

By now many of you have heard through other channels, but it’s time to make it official. My husband has accepted a job in L.A. County. Today we came to terms with someone selling a house in the high desert city of Lancaster, California, and so I’m going to be moving to one of the few California cities that is actually hotter than Fresno.

I’m not sure yet what this is going to mean for my writing. On the one hand, I don’t have work down there, so at least in the near term I’m going to have a lot more time to dedicate to it. On the other hand, even Lancaster – two hours north of Los Angeles – is insanely more expensive than Fresno, and so I’m going to have to find work down there if we’re going to do anything other than subsist. Since academic jobs with schedules conducive to writing aren’t easy to find, that may mean that you’ll see me at the local Home Depot (do they do employee discounts?) exhausting myself working retail hours.

I’m also now trying to get the Fresno house ready to sell. That means packing up all my stuff, painting the walls colors that I can’t believe anyone actually likes, and fixing all the “little” things that we’ve learned to deal with but will be off-putting to potential buyers. That’s going to keep me very busy for a while.

It’s been an adventure, but I’ve always tried to go with the flow in life. We’ll see where the currents are carrying me next. I’ll miss Fresno, but I suspect I’ll also really like Lancaster.

Though if anyone knows where the science fiction community down there keeps itself hidden, I’d love you to send along the appropriate passwords.

Lancaster is okay. Its just kind of far from LA. The commute from Riverside County is closer and things are a bit more affordable. Not all Riverside is boonies these days.

I quite like Riverside, actually. Alas, since the husband's job is in Santa Clarita, it just wasn't a practical commute for him.

Best wishes on these transitions (moving, finding work, &c.)! May you both get in some good writing and find a decent job to help with the new circumstances.
